So much for home field advantage. All four home teams lost outright last weekend in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs (although two of the four home teams did cover the pointspread). You may recall that only the only home team favored by the online sportsbooks was Washington (as a small one-point choice), as the Chiefs, Steelers, and Seahawks were all listed as road favorites.

Pittsburgh and Seattle were particularly fortunate to advance to this weekend. The Steelers held a commanding lead for the majority of the game, but Cincinnati made a late comeback to take the lead with about two minutes remaining. Pittsburgh benefitted from a few calls and fortuitous penalties to get close enough to kick the game-winning field goal. That final drive has Bengals fans seething, enough for them to start a petition to look into the officiating.

Minnesota fans aren’t angry as much as they are disappointed. They were all set to advance to the next round and only needed to make a 27-yard field goal on the final play, but Vikings kicker Blair Walsh hooked it left and Seattle survived. There are multiple theories for the missed field goal and the hold was certainly poor, but any way you look at it the Vikings walk away knowing they should have won that game.

Moving on to this weekend, all four home teams are favored to win. New England, Denver, Carolina, and Arizona were all off last week earning a first-round bye. All four of those teams are returning less than 2:1 odds to win their conference, and while the Patriots are currently a +350 favorite to win the Super Bowl, there are four other teams that are between +400 and +475 to win it all.

The nature of college football is always controversial, as unlike any other sport the National Championship is based largely on opinion rather than on the field of play. College Football aimed to improve that, installing a new four-team playoff last season.

This year, we agree with the CFP committee in choosing Clemson, Alabama, Michigan State, and Oklahoma, as those were the four most deserving teams. However, being deserving is not the same as being the best. While Clemson is deserving of the #1 overall ranking and seeding, they are not the best team in the country and the Aceperhead pay per head review obviously agree as the Tigers are an underdog against fourth-seeded Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.

In fact, we don’t even think Clemson is among the FOUR best teams in the country, as we believe Ohio State is far superior based on the eye test. But as it stands, this game sets up as a trap line by the linesmaker, with many novice college football bettors grabbing the points with the top-ranked Tigers while more experienced bettors are laying the three points with Oklahoma.

After the first week of College Football action, some teams have established themselves as legitimate contenders (Ohio State, Alabama) while others were less-than-impressive and still have some things to work out (Baylor, Oregon).

Like last weekend, the early non-conference schedule features a ton of lopsided matchups and heavy favorites. There are, however a few marquee games on this weekend’s slate, highlighted by the first matchup of top ten teams when Oregon visits East Lansing to take on Michigan State.

These teams met last year, with Oregon scoring a 46-27 home win as a 14-point favorite. That was a tough beat for MSU backers, as the Spartans held a nine-point lead late in the third quarter before Oregon rallied to score the last 28 points of the game.
